Wat hebben kou, koormuziek, trombones, Venetië en Oostenrijkse kloosters met elkaar gemeen? Verrassend veel, zo blijkt.

Deze winter neemt Chordiality je mee op reis in het verhaal van Anton Bruckner: de verlegen, obsessief nauwkeurige componist uit het klooster van Sankt Florian, die in zijn koorwerken een ongekende diepgang en warmte wist te vangen. Zijn hoogromantische motetten en koralen voeren ons langs zijn grote inspiratiebronnen: de strenge compositiestijl van Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina en de dramatische klankwereld van Richard Wagner, die Bruckner vanaf het eerste moment diep wist te raken.

Een bijzondere samenwerking maakt dit programma extra uniek: een trombonetrio onder leiding van Tim Dowling, expert in historische uitvoeringspraktijk en trombonist bij het Residentie Orkest. Hun instrumenten kleuren het repertoire op authentieke wijze. De volle, warme klanken van de hoogromantische trombones laten Bruckners koormuziek nog intenser klinken, terwijl de renaissancetrombones ons meenemen naar Venetië, waar de sprankelende pracht van Giovanni Gabrieli weerklinkt.
En ja… Brrr is óók het geluid van kou. Daarom betreden we de ijzige Venetiaanse Winter van Vivaldi, kleumen we samen met Purcell in zijn Cold Song, en verwarmen we ons daarna aan de nobele tromboneklanken van Kindermann.

What do cold, choral music, trombones, Venice, and Austrian monasteries have in common? More than you might think.
This winter, Chordiality takes you on a journey through the story of Anton Bruckner: the shy, obsessively meticulous composer from the monastery of Sankt Florian, who captured remarkable depth and warmth in his choral works. His high-Romantic motets and chorales guide us along his great sources of inspiration: the strict compositional style of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and the dramatic soundscape of Richard Wagner, which moved Bruckner profoundly from the very beginning.
This is not a traditional concert, but a layered vocal theatre experience where song, spoken word, and visual art converge. Chordiality offers more than music: it brings stories and imagery that invite the audience into a reflection on social engagement, courage, and the power of raising one’s voice.
Adding a special touch to this programme is the trombone trio led by Tim Dowling, expert in historical performance practice and trombonist with the Residentie Orkest. Their instruments bring the music to life in an authentic way: the rich, warm tones of the high-Romantic trombones deepen the resonance of Bruckner’s choral works, while the Renaissance trombones transport us to Venice, where the the sparkling brilliance of Giovanni Gabrieli resounds.
And yes… Brrr is also the sound of cold. We’ll step into Vivaldi’s icy Venetian Winter, shiver with Purcell in his Cold Song, only to warm ourselves with the noble trombone tones of Kindermann.
